Discipling Kids in Worship w/ Yancy

If you’re a parent or involved in children / youth ministry, discipling kids and exposing them to worship music can have a big impact. Artist Yancy joins Matt McCoy from Loop Community to talk about her new book “Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship”. Yancy is a popular artist, author and mother who focuses on providing worship music and resources for children and families.

The Power of Music

If you try to remember a sermon you heard three weeks ago, it may be hard to remember exact quotes from it. But if you think back to a song you sang three weeks ago, it might be a lot easier to remember the words. The same works for kids and how they learn!

Yancy: “I believe that there is power in music and there is a stickiness to the context of a song, the lyrics and the melody together. I remember songs from my childhood and the cassettes my mom played in our mini van driving around playing errands. To this day I can be sitting in a church service or a programming meeting and someone says something or reads a scripture that one of those songs are about and in my mind instantly that song starts playing. Even though I haven’t heard that song in 30 years. That’s what I love. Whether you’re a parent or a church leader, what you do isn’t about Sunday. It’s about their future. Planting stuff inside of them that they may not need until later in their life.”

Being Intentional

Children pick up on the things they hear and what they’re exposed to. Being intentional to what music we expose them to can have a big impact on their lives.

Yancy: Being intentional about what you push play on is so important. Every car ride, those are minutes that you have to actually disciple your kids. I was in the car with my boys and we were listening to the new Brandon Lake album and my younger son said “I don’t understand what the devil meant for bad, God meant for good.” And he keeps circling back to it trying to understand. He’s hearing things and picks up on it and asks questions about it. It creates opportunities for us to talk about it and for me to disciple him. I hear from parents that at bedtime, conversations they have with their children, they’ll question something they heard in one of my songs and they’ll have a conversation about it opening their mind up to spiritual ideas and scripture.”
